Denial of Service Attack Targets Epoch Times - Elements in Chinese Communist regime suspected

The Epoch Times was hit with a series of cyber attacks beginning on March 29, with an unsuccessful distributed denial of service attack first targeting epochtimes.com, before follow-up sorties on connected servers on the morning of April 1. The English website, theepochtimes.com, was also targeted in the second round of attacks, suffering what appeared to be a denial of service attack.
The first attack on the evening of March 29 targeted the front end of epochtimes.com, the Chinese-language website, but was soon repelled, according to Jan Jekielek, website chief editor of TheEpochTimes.com.
Then on the morning of April 1, from approximately 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. EDT, attackers went after epochtimes.com’s Domain Name System, or DNS, server. DNS is a way of translating a website, as written in English like “epochtimes.com,” into an Internet protocol address, like “50.18.114.2.” The attackers used what is called a “DNS query flood” to disrupt the server hosting that system, which would have caused users attempting to visit epochtimes.com to find the page unable to load.
The attacking IP addresses, numbering over 10, were added to a blacklist, stopping the attack. The IP addresses used may have been compromised computer systems, or they may have been spoofed by the attackers, according to Jekielek.
A concurrent attack on April 1 was aimed at theepochtimes.com, the English-language website, which resides on a different server. “Basically our server was saturated,” Jekielek said. That took place between 8:40 a.m. and 10 a.m. EDT. “It was consistent with what a DOS attack looks like. Your ports are flooded,” he said.
The attack was such that huge numbers of queries are made to multiple ports on the server, which prevents the server from functioning properly. “They’re taking up the whole pipe, but they’re not reading. The server is being hit repeatedly for information from a whole ton of the same computers,” Jekielek said. “Our pipe was maxed out.” The server did not crash during the attack.
The Epoch Times email, content management, voice, and text chat servers were also targeted.
Jekielek said that the attacks were still being analyzed.
Traffic to epochtimes.com from mainland China has increased dramatically in recent months. “Right after Wang Lijun escaped on Feb 6, unique view counts on The Epoch Times increased by 3.4 times,” said Changlei Xiong, a member of the technical staff.
After March 15, when the removal of former Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai was announced, Xiong said that the unique view counts on epochtimes.com again tripled from the February increase, making the traffic to the website far outstrip that to other overseas Chinese media outlets, according to statistics compiled by Alexa, an Internet traffic measurement company.
From the technical information that is able to be gathered on the attacks, it is not possible to tell where they ultimately originated from, or whether they were the work of a state or non-state actor.
The attack on the Epoch Times website occurs within the context of a power struggle in Beijing on which The Epoch Times has reported extensively. Analysts say that one side, the faction headed by Party chief Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, wants at least some information about human rights abuses to flow more freely, while the faction headed by former regime leader Jiang Zemin wants to keep information restricted.
Beginning around March 21, searches on the Chinese Internet for sensitive terms that had previously been blocked were possible. Analysts said that searches for terms such as “June 4,” referring to the Tiananmen Square Massacre, or “live harvest,” referring to the atrocity of forced, live organ harvesting, put the Jiang Zemin faction at a disadvantage. Jiang is closely tied to the Tiananmen Square massacre and his faction, in particular Bo Xilai and domestic security czar Zhou Yongkang, are believed to be heavily implicated in forced, live organ harvesting. The Epoch Times has long reported on Zhou’s connection to human rights violations in China.
Analysts believe a crackdown on the use of popular microblogging platforms in China on March 31 was inspired by Zhou Yongkang, who was thought to be fighting back against Hu and Wen.
According to a Wikileaks cable from May 18, 2009, Zhou Yongkang was involved in the oversight of Chinese hacking against Google. Google cited the persistent hacking campaign, by actors thought to be associated with the Chinese Communist Party, as one of the reasons it would wind back its operations in China.
The recent attack on The Epoch Times servers was clearly coordinated and required a certain degree of technical expertise and computer and human resources, Jekielek said. The attackers were also determined to cause a disruption in access to the site, as they mounted one attack after the first failed, he said, also pointing out that there is no obvious economic incentive for rogue actors to perform such an attack.
“Who else,” asked Jekielek rhetorically, “but the Chinese Communist Party, would have an interest in mounting an attack of this sort? And who in the Chinese Communist Party is more interested in silencing the Epoch Times’ reporting on the situation in China than Zhou Yongkang?”
According to an unnamed Beijing source, Zhou Yongkang, a member of the elite nine-member Politburo Standing Committee, secretly promised to help Bo join him in the country's most powerful decision-making body and take over his role as secretary of the Political and Legislative Affairs Committee. This would have allowed Bo to control the People's Armed Police and Ministry of Public Security, and force Xi to step down before inserting himself in the vice president's place as expected future general secretary, the source said.
Mingjing also reported that Bo, through Wang and in the name of Chongqing's Public Security Bureau, purchased 5,000 rifles and 50,000 rounds of ammunition from a local munitions factory last year in order to create a private army. The People's Armed Police has already been sent to Chongqing to investigate the whereabouts of the weapons, the report said. The odds are that the rumors are groundless. If, however, they have merit and some sort of military coup by hardliners unfolds in Beijing, then this squares with the global bipolar disorder hypothesis I've long been touting. Likewise, the bets of the Capitalist West on the feigned end of the Cold War will be off as the Communist East shows its true face:
UPDATE: For some strange reason, Chinese authorities have just allowed the Chinese-language version of The Epoch Times to be viewed behind the 'Great Firewall' - an outlet for the Communist-repressed Falun Gong movement (notably, this has been particularly so for Bo Xilai's city). It's as if Chinese intelligence is seeking to use internet activity (closely monitored at the Pentagon where there's signs of heightened activity) to portray a power struggle of some sort between hardliners and reformers. Allowing The Epoch Times to be publicly seen in China indicates that reformers currently have the upper hand. Of course, the real question is: Why are Beijing authorities staging such theater for Western audiences?
One possibility that has come to mind is that, if Bo Xilai, Maoist allies and nationalist military elements have thrown a hardline coup in Beijing, they might have allowed public access to The Epoch Times to falsely signal that moderates are still in power while they maneuver behind the scenes to take full control, particularly with regard to the military and intelligence services. Also, this would provide an opportunity for tracking down Chinese netizens sympathetic to Falun Gong. Of course, almost any such "events" in Beijing must be seen as staged theater for Western audiences since "nationalist hardliners" have been running the show all along.
The day before the sacking (of Bo Xilai), Wen Jiabao, China’s prime minister, had foreshadowed it with a rare public ticking-off for the Chongqing leadership at a press conference. In another presumed dig at Mr Bo, however, Mr Wen said something rather remarkable: that, without political reform China might suffer another tragedy, “like the Cultural Revolution”.

North Korea's ambassador to China is purportedly missing and rumored to be in Pyongyang. Meanwhile, Chinese President Hu Jintao reportedly went to the North Korean embassy in Beijing to try to meet the ambassador. This all may be suggestive that a power struggle is currently underway in North Korea.

In recent days the crises in Syria and Egypt have been coming to a head along side the confrontation between Israel and Iran. Throw Kosovo into the mix, and maybe Korea too, and it's not to hard to see how an all-out East-West conflict will be the outcome. That this will come as a total surprise to almost everyone is by design.
Using the U.N., America and the Western military powers were dragged into military intervention against Libya under the call to stand up for democracy and protect innocent Libyan civilians from the murderous repression of the seemingly insane dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
The U.S., U.K. and France would have kept out of the whole Libyan imbroglio until Arab states impressed upon them the need to act:
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States will support its European, Canadian and Arab partners in their efforts to stop further violence against civilians in Libya by Muammar Qaddafi’s forces, including “through the effective implementation of a no-fly zone.”
Arab nation leadership in efforts to stop violence in Libya has played a key role in mobilizing the international coalition, Clinton said. Clinton said that the Arab League with its “pivotal statement” changed the “diplomatic landscape” with regard to the approach toward the United Nations Security Council resolution this week authorizing “all necessary measures,” including a no-fly zone to end violence and protect civilians in that country. Of all nations, Lebanon took up the baton by submitting a U.N. resolution authorizing "all necessary measures" to impose a no-fly zone in Libya, protect civilian areas and pressure Libyan leader Gaddafi into accepting a ceasefire - a very broad permission slip for the use of military force against Libya that ultimately implies forcefully removing Gaddafi from power.
Lebanon?!
Lebanon is now a puppet state of Syria and Iran, both with comparable regimes to that of Libya. Thus Lebanon should have been unwilling to invite Western military action against Libya to overthrow a like regime to that of its Iranian and Syrian controllers.
Meanwhile, this sweeping U.N. resolution was somehow allowed to pass without a veto by Russia or even an effort by Moscow to constrain the broad language allowing substantial use of Western-led military force?! This somehow occurred even though Russia's NATO Ambassador commented on March 1st:
"If someone in Washington is seeking a blitzkrieg in Libya, it is a serious mistake because any use of military force outside the NATO responsibility zone will be considered a violation of international law."
This is all total BS.
Now, as potent Western military intervention occurs since Gaddafi continued to pummel civilian populations in key opposition centers like Benghazi, suddenly Russia, China and the Arab League do a total about-face?!
As the Western air-strikes began Saturday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich made the comment: "Air force units from a host of countries began military actions in Libya on March 19. Moscow regrets this military action."
Russia called on Britain, France and the United States on Sunday to stop air strikes against what it said were non-military targets in Libya, saying the attacks had caused civilian casualties.
"In that respect we call on countries involved to stop the non-selective use of force," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.
China regrets the multinational military strike launched against Libya, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Sunday.
"China has noticed the latest development in Libya and regrets the military strike against Libya," Jiang Yu said, adding that China did not agree with resorting to force in international relations.
"China believes that the tenet and principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant international laws should be adhered to, and Libya's sovereignty, independence, unification and territory integrity should be respected," Xinhua news agency quoted her as saying.
"We hope stability could be restored in Libya as soon as possible so as to avoid more civilian casualties caused by the escalation of military conflicts," she said.
Meanwhile, as if the U.S. had been somehow "punked", today Arab League chief Amr Moussa, who supported U.N. Resolution 1973, called for an emergency meeting of his organization and commented:
"What is happening in Libya differs from the aim of imposing a no-fly zone, and what we want is the protection of civilians and not the bombardment of more civilians."
Really?
In other words, the Western powers are behaving like 'imperialist, capitalist, war-mongering, oil-dominating bad guys'....right?!
Wrong! We've simply been duped by our insidious enemies into some sort of dangerous geopolitical trap.
Hmmmm.....let's think about this for a second.
Oh....here's what I think might be the proper response to the new flip-flopping tripe from Russia, China and the Arab League:
My suggestion to Western leaders is to completely back off from Libya right now. Let the nation implode if that's what Libya and its Russian overseer want to happen. The blood will be on their hands.

Being an American, I despise this story as much as anyone else, but I'm not going to fool myself. The bottom line is that if the end of the Cold War occurred on Christmas Day in the wake of a lunar eclipse on the winter solstice in 1991, then maybe the Kremlin is planning to start the Hot War in the wake of a lunar eclipse on the winter solstice this year.
The Kremlin has been pretty brazen in its deceptive and ultimately murderous manipulation of world history, yet everyone in the West continues to believe in the "strong delusion".
I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as late figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. With the end of the Soviet Union, the world embarked on a twenty year honeymoon between East and West during which everyone has come to believe that Russia and China do not engage in long-term planning, strategic deception and military force to dominate their enemies. Nevertheless, the British and French parliaments unanimously endorsed the Munich Accord, but this did not mean 'peace for their time' as Neville Chamberlain infamously declared.
With the upcoming lunar eclipse, there is reason to believe the long-term plan of the "Old Enemy" is nearing the endgame and the West's checkmate, i.e., the resurgence of "communism" and Eastern totalitarianism and the beginning of the Hot War. Even with all the evidence of this diabolical plot unfolding according to "Kremlin Astrology", no one sees the underlying conspiracy. Thus, the strategic objective of defeating the Western society is near.
A potential ignition point at this juncture is the Korean Peninsula where the demilitarized zone (DMZ) separating North and South Korea is the last active battle front between the Communist East and Capitalist West (no peace treaty was ever signed in the the wake of the Korean War).
Recent news is that South Korea will replay a military drill on the West Sea island of Yeonpyeong that led to a North Korean artillery barrage of the island. North Korea has threatened to strike again should the drill occur, except this time South Korea is prepared to hit back hard upon which North Korea vows to hit back harder, even with nuclear force.
Aggressive diplomacy is underway to get the Koreas to back away from a new conflict, including a visit to Pyongyang by former congressman Bill Richardson, so it is unknown how this will all play out, but the timing of the current crisis relative to the upcoming lunar eclipse seems telltale.
MASS PSYCHOLOGY DYNAMICS
Lunar eclipses can be associated with major reversals in mass mood per the discovery of Steve Puetz:
Several years back, a cycle watcher named Steve Puetz attempted to see if eclipses and market crashes were somehow related. He studied eight of the greatest crashes in financial history, from the Holland Tulip Mania of 1637 to the Nikkei of 1990. He found that market crashes tend to occur near full moons, and that the greatest number of crashes start after the first full moon after a solar eclipse, when that full moon is also a lunar eclipse. Puetz found that all eight crashes occurred six days before to three days after a full moon that occurred within six weeks of a solar eclipse. The odds of that being a coincidence, Puetz calculated, are less than 1 in 127,000.
Puetz was not saying that so-called "Puetz windows" always lead to crashes, but that if a crash is going to occur, a Puetz window would be the likely time frame in which it would happen. Puetz windows tend to occur every year or two, while crashes are rare events. (SOURCE)
He....concludes that a full moon in general and a lunar (eclipse) full moon close to solar eclipses, in particular, seem to be the triggering device that allows for the rapid transformation of investor psychology from manic greed to paranoia (SOURCE).
The potential for a dramatic upset of collective confidence seems particularly high in the near-future given the Dow Jones Composite index appears to be peaking around the psychologically significant 4000 mark as over-viewed in a recent blog:

Confirmed Hindenburg Omens are very rare. There have been only 28 confirmed Hindenburg Omen signals over the past 25 years. December 2010's is the 29th. This is amazing when you consider that during that time span, there were roughly 6,400 trading days. Of those 6,400 trading days where it was possible to generate a confirmed official Hindenburg Omen, only 197 (3.1 percent) generated one, clustering into 28 confirmed potential stock market crash signals.
If we define a crash as a 15% decline, of the previous 28 confirmed Hindenburg Omen signals, eight (28.5 percent ) were followed by financial system threatening, life-as-we-know-it threatening stock market crashes. Three (10.7 percent) more were followed by stock market selling panics (10% to 14.9% declines). Four more (14.3 percent) resulted in sharp declines (8% to 9.9% drops). Six (21.4 percent) were followed by meaningful declines (5% to 7.9%), five (17.8 percent) saw mild declines (2.0% to 4.9%), and two (7.1 percent) were failures, with subsequent declines of 2.0% or less. Put another way, there is a 28 percent probability that a stock market crash -- the big one -- will occur after we get a confirmed (more than one in a cluster) Hindenburg Omen. There is a 39.2 percent probability that at least a panic sell-off will occur. There is a 53.5 percent probability that a sharp decline greater than 8.0 % will occur, and there is a 74.9 percent probability that a stock market decline of at least 5 percent will occur. Only one out of roughly 14 times will this signal fail.
Thus, the ingredients are in place in mass psychology for a historic upset of collective confidence. This upset could take the form of a geopolitical shock, of which one appears possible on the Korean Peninsula in the coming days.
Following an Elliott Wave Supercycle peak of man's creative mania into 1929, the subsequent cyclical collapse in mass mood involved the October '29 stock market crash, the Great Depression and the relative rise of totalitarian/collectivist powers in the East, i.e., Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's Italy, Tojo's Japan and Stalin's Russia, via the second world war. Relative Eastern dominance peaked into the early-1940s when Hitler had overrun continental Europe and the Axis powers were at their zenith of power. After that low a new Supercycle upswing in mass mood got underway involving the rise of American economic and military global supremacy. Over the last twenty years, with the seeming collapse of the Soviet Union, the dominance of the West reached a new historical extreme...
Thus, one should not be surprised if the onset of the "Apocalypse Wave" collapse in mass mood is associated with an outbreak of conflict between the Communist East and Capitalist West on the Korean Peninsula.
As I've noted before, that one of the initial targets in such a conflict is "Seoul", which means "capital" in Korean, seems historically symbolic in that what is afflicted, what is being handed over to the evil of destruction and tyranny after an era of creation and liberty, is the SOUL of humanity. Why is this the case? Because for falling into the temptation of human nature, our species is literally being delivered to the Evil One:

So what is the solution to this globally insane predicament?
I believe I've returned to this ill-fated world to act as a sort of "soul doctor" for man and help redeem our species from its insane misjudgment of reality. The truth is that in order for there to be peace and harmony in this world, we need to go against our selfish nature and let God's compassionate love for all lead our way. After all, the new reality derived from the revolutionary creative development of human society to-date is extreme INTERDEPENDENCY such that not loving others as ourselves is ultimately suicidal, a point I'm afraid is about to become all too clear.
These amazing satellite images show sprawling cities built in remote parts of China that have been left completely abandoned, sometimes years after their construction.
Elaborate public buildings and open spaces are completely unused, with the exception of a few government vehicles near communist authority offices.
Some estimates put the number of empty homes at as many as 64 million, with up to 20 new cities being built every year in the country's vast swathes of free land.
Now why would Beijing be building vacant cities in remote parts of China?
But let's not think about that, right? Americans want to watch football and American Idol and not fret about the machinations of the 'Old Enemy' even though it's increasingly clear that a conflict between the Communist East and Capitalist West has been in the works all along.
Let's cut to the chase as the crisis on the Korean peninsula comes to a head.
What everyone needs to recognize is that Kim Jong Il and his young heir apparent Kim Jong-un don't take a dump without the permission of Beijing and Moscow.
Today, China supplies about 90% of North Korea's oil, 80% of its consumer goods and 45% of its food. Beijing is Pyongyang's only formal military ally and its primary backer in the United Nations Security Council and other diplomatic forums. That Western analysts try and ascertain the thinking of Pyongyang without reference to the larger strategic machinations of the "Old Enemy" is foolhardy and incompetent, to say the least. The term "Western intelligence" truly is an oxymoron IMHO:

Note how China is playing hardball with Obama in condemning North Korea in its brazen artillery attack on civilian targets on Yeonpyeong and is strangely unwilling to cooperate in reigning in the seeming rogue dictatorial regime in Pyongyang:
As part of an overall strategic imperative, China spent the last few decades befriending and trading with the West in order to acquire our technology and the means of production using mercantalist trade policies and their own slave labor supply. American and Western capitalists, stupid, self-serving and profiteering, were happy to cooperate in this ultimately suicidal endeavor. Thus, now global production is based in the land of our enemy and America mainly produces IOUs.
North Korea is a chess piece in the global game of Realpolitik that has been left ready to move at the opportune time to create a split between East and West, totalitarian "Communism" and libertarian "Capitalism", when the strategists in Moscow and Beijing see fit. In one quick maneuver the U.S. will find itself on the losing end of this game, i.e., we are set for checkmate when the Old Enemy so chooses now, and a primary target will be the Seoul of mankind.
